Ritual
Having worked exclusively with wood, transitioning to volcanic stone offered both an exciting challenge and a fresh creative opportunity. This time, our creative process draws upon various elements of Mexican heritage, inspired by the Puuc-style architecture of the Maya and to the Art Deco influences of the Roma Sue neighborhood where our studio is located.
The lamp’s form explores the symbolic significance of doors throughout history—particularly in Maya architecture, where doorways were more than mere passageways. They served as thresholds between the physical and spiritual worlds, encapsulating concepts of time, space, and transformation. Its design allows light to flow through both sides of the structure, while the raw materiality of volcanic stone not only makes it ideal for use as an exterior lamp but also transforms it into a sculptural work of art.
